Unsettling the Word – October & November 2020

On October 10 we discussed Heroes Save Lives on page 59. The scripture that it was reflecting on was Judges 16:1-30. We use a study guide developed by SCM (Student Christian Movement) Canada – Unsettling the Word: The Study Guide

It was a very interesting discussion of how we see Samson and how we see Delilah. As always, it’s helpful to have a resident scripture scholar on hand. Here’s the video: https://www.facebook.com/vancouvercatholicworker/videos/827733254666726

On November 14 we discussed What about Orpah on page 62. The scripture that it was reflecting on was Ruth 1:1-18. We use a study guide developed by SCM (Student Christian Movement) Canada – Unsettling the Word: The Study Guide

It was nice to discuss women’s stories and perspectives in biblical times and in the contemporary indigenous experience. We did have some technical challenges that day. Here’s the video: https://www.facebook.com/vancouvercatholicworker/videos/421751115880901

Vikki has provided a piece that discusses the the biblical scholarship around the authorship of the five books of the Pentateuch or Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) – The JEPD Theory

Unsettling the Word drop in book study & COVID-19 – updated with the video

We are still meeting today for discussion on Unsettling the Word and you are welcome to join us. We’re a small group and there’s room to sit 1 meter apart. We are also going to try out a Facebook Live event to offer connection for more folks. Not sure how successful it will be but we will try.

We know not everyone is on Facebook but for today, this is the platform we’ll use. We’ll probably learn some more online publishing/streaming skills in the days to come. Here’s the link to our Page, we’ll start at 2pm – https://www.facebook.com/vancouvercatholicworker/

Here’s the video from this session –

Activities & meetings have resumed

Please join us for our latest reconciliation conversation. This one’s going to carry on into the longterm, there’s lots of material.

Unsettling the Word – Reconciliation Scripture study:

For generations, the Bible has been employed by settler colonial societies as a weapon to dispossess Indigenous and racialized peoples of their lands, cultures, and spiritualities. Given this devastating legacy, many want nothing to do with it. But is it possible for the exploited and their allies to reclaim the Bible from the dominant powers? Can we make it an instrument for justice in the cause of the oppressed? Even a nonviolent weapon toward decolonization?

In Unsettling the Word, over 60 Indigenous and Settler authors come together to wrestle with the Scriptures, re-reading and re-imagining the ancient text for the sake of reparative futures. Created by Mennonite Church Canada’s Indigenous-Settler Relations program, Unsettling the Word is intended to nurture courageous conversations with the Bible, our current settler colonial contexts, and the Church’s call to costly peacemaking.
